Interview With an Intern: Betel in IT

Meet Betel, our newest IT intern. As part of our commitment to inclusive hiring practices, we have partnered with Year Up, a non-profit whose mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by ensuring that young adults gain the skills, experiences, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through careers and higher education. We are delighted that she has joined the Malbek team. With her outgoing personality and productive spirit, she eagerly rolled up her sleeves and pitched into a variety of new projects that showcased her talent. In the future, Betel plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design in order to take her many talents to the next level and gain control of her economic future. She wants to prove to herself that she has the talent and skills to realize her dreams while also setting a positive example for those that come after her.

What is it like working for a start-up during COVID?
As an intern coming from Year Up, where some of my classmates haven’t yet been placed at an internship because of COVID, I have to say that I feel lucky to be matched at Malbek.

Can you share one thing that has really surprised you during your internship?
One thing that surprised me at Malbek is how everyone is close and very supportive. I get the family vibe from everyone on the Malbek team. This is very different to the strict work vibe I was expecting before I started.

Tell us about a project that you’ve worked on and really enjoyed.
I’ve been working on several projects so far. The most exciting project for me was the Smartsheet project. This was the first project I participated in, at Malbek. It created great opportunity for me to showcase my skills and also learn a lot about what they do.

Share something you’ve learned during your time at Malbek that you think you will always carry with you.
One thing I learned and will always carry with me is the sense of teamwork they have here at Malbek. Everyone is willing to help and work with you on any project. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you will have the support and the advice you may need.

What is your best piece of advice to someone looking to get into tech?
Passion must be the key to make a good IT professional. Also, patience is very important. Make sure you don’t hesitate to ask any questions and learn from your colleagues.
